Supportive Periodontal Therapy is a procedure performed to thoroughly clean the teeth and supporting tissues. Supportive therapy is important dental treatment for halting the progression of periodontal disease and gingivitis.

Periodontal (gum) disease is an inflammation or infection of the gums and bone that supports your teeth. Many patients experience little to no pain, which is why seeing your hygienist regularly is so important. With periodontal disease, the bacteria present has the potential to compromise your supporting tooth structure, including bone, which can lead to tooth loss. Although plaque is a contributing factor, poorly fitting crown and bridges, badly aligned teeth, defective fillings and medical conditions can also contribute to the progression of periodontal disease.

The first step usually involves a special cleaning, called “scaling and root planing,” to remove plaque and tartar deposits on the tooth and root surfaces. This procedure helps gum tissue to heal and periodontal pockets to shrink.

After scaling and root planing is completed, many patients do not require any surgical treatment. However, we do recommend regular Therapeutic (periodontal) maintenance appointments every 3-4 months to sustain your health.
